June 2024

Kia ora koutou Permaculture Whānau,

If you are a paid member of Permaculture in New Zealand, you would have received a renewal invitation by email on Friday. If you did not see it in your inbox please check your spam and junk mail folders. We really appreciate our paid members as your support helps us spread permaculture around Aotearoa New Zealand and we will continue to work hard volunteering our time to bring you as many benefits as we can.

If you are not yet a paid member, now is a great time to join!
All memberships paid by July 1, 2024 will not only get guaranteed access to early bird tickets for the National Permaculture Hui in November before they go on sale to the general public, but you also receive a discounted price.

With the cooler and wetter weather I have been spending less time in the garden but a lot more time planning ahead for all the new varieties I want to try over the warmer months, and the things like my yacon that are not thriving in their current location, and need a new location. The list of new plants and seeds that I want to try is growing out of control (as it does most years) and will need a good prune before I start asking around, swapping, bartering and if I have to, shopping. I also need to factor in the time and energy I have to invest as well as when peak harvest will occur, as there are travel plans in my future to work around as well as all the planning for the Hui that myself and the Council are working on. But the cooler months are perfect for this type of work.

So as you are doing some planning for the months ahead consider locking in some time for your own growth through learning, sharing and connecting at the National Hui. We really hope you can join us and look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Ngā mihi

Share your permaculture journey

PiNZ member Heather Brett completed her PDC in March this year. Here, she shares her permaculture journey.
We live in Maungatautari which is south of Cambridge. We purchased the 1.3 acre property just under two years ago. Our initial vision 10 months ago was just to grow enough food to be partially self-sustainable for our family of five (three generations) with surplus for friends, family and community. But now I believe we truly could use what we have learned to encourage others to do the same.
We are very exposed to wind from all directions, we had so much rain the first year and not enough the second. We also have 40 odd oversized gum trees to remove that are growing on our boundary creating a nightmare for felling safely and affordably. Once we have overcome all of this I will let you know what was the biggest challenge!
Want to share your permaculture journey? Email us your story! Include your name, location and tell us about how you started, what you’ve learned and your biggest challenges and rewards. Attach 3-5 photos too. Email address: newsletter@permaculture.org.nz
