October 2024 Newsletter

Kia ora koutou permaculture whānau,We are less than three weeks from having the opportunity to come together at the 2024 National Permaculture Hui, and in addition to our amazing speakers and facilitators we are really excited to be able to embrace our theme of reconnecting in the beautiful space of the Green School. So that we can confirm numbers to our caterers, ticket sales will close on November 1st so if you are considering coming you have a week to purchase your ticket. This event focuses heavily on connection and reconnection (people care) and we are organising sessions specifically with this focus so that we can facilitate the building of connections between participants within and across regions so that we can all leave the event feeling like we have more to give as we head back to our communities. There is also an added bonus of all hui ticket holders getting five tickets to gardens in the sustainable backyards trail as part of the ticket so if you are coming up early you can take advantage of that.
For the first time there is also a Sustainable Builds Trail taking place the week following the hui. Explore a range of technologies and materials including passive and tiny homes, solar set-ups, water collection, and even builds made from rammed earth and hempcrete.Don’t forget Permaculture Teacher Training is being offered immediately after the National Permaculture Hui in Taranaki. Secure your place today and reinvigorate your teaching style. You can get more information here. Finally, for all our paid members, our AGM will be held on Sunday December 1st and so now is the time to consider if you would like to volunteer to be on the PiNZ council. We will be sending out more information about this in the next few weeks so in the meantime have a think about getting involved.

The weekend’s workshops & presentation schedule

We can’t wait to welcome everyone on Friday afternoon, November 8. When you arrive, there’ll be plenty of time for a social catchup and (non-alcoholic) drinks.
We’ve got a packed schedule, with workshops and presentations from experts, activists, environmentalists and champions in the permaculture space. They are going to present case studies, practical tips and design ideas. Take a look at the programme,

What to bring to the hui

Apart from the usual stuff you take with you on your travels,
we’d like to ask that you add these to your bags!

Seeds for swapping

Don’t forget to bring your extra and leftover seeds to swap and trade with other permies. It’s a great way to meet someone and a wonderful opportunity to learn about possible new crops or heritage varieties.

Cutlery & crockery

We endeavour to minimise waste and maximise sustainability, so as much as you are able, bring your own utensils, bowls, containers or go cups to use during meal and tea times.

Flexible payment option for Hui tickets

If you’d like to make arrangements for a payment plan to get your tickets and come to the Hui, please email our treasurer at treasurer@permaculture.org.nz. You can pay a 50% deposit now, and make the final payment on November 1, 2024.

Don’t forget: PiNZ members get a discount too! There’s still time to sign up.

2025 National Permaculture Hui
Looking ahead, we would like to harness the passion of permaculture practitioners within each region. Traditionally, the hui has been hosted by different regions around the country, but after such a long space of time without a hui, the council will be restarting the flow by managing this year’s event. This provides the regions time to consider if they will be the hosts for the 2025, 2026 or 2027 hui as it is an event that takes both time and a great deal of teamwork to plan.
So do you think you want to host a future hui? Gather your tribe and have a chat, then let us know and we will work with you to make it happen. Email info@permaculture.org.nz and we will help you get set up.
