August 2024 Newsletter

Kia ora koutou permaculture whānau,

Tickets to this years Hui have now been released to the general public and we are excited by the sales we are seeing from both members and non-members.

Discounted tickets for paid Permaculture in New Zealand members are still available for now, but you need to get in quick! Renew your membership and secure those tickets before they are gone as ticket numbers are limited.

We are also working on some affordable accommodation options for ticket holders and as soon as this is confirmed information will be made available on the Hui website.

This event focuses heavily on connection and reconnection (people care) and we are organising sessions specifically with this focus so that we can facilitate the building of connections between participants within and across regions so that we can all leave the event feeling like we have more to give as we head back to our communities.

This ethic of people care has been very evident in my life recently when I undertook the pruning of some very overgrown apple trees for an older local lady who regularly volunteers at the community garden I manage. Having been widowed two years ago, pruning had not been something she could manage on her own and she had not wanted to ask for help, so she asked me if I knew of a local company who could do the work for her. Two days of pruning was exchanged for some great conversation, hot lunches, seedlings and connection, as well as her care, education and supervision of my 8-year-old (and his practice pruning on pruned branches). This people care flowed in all directions and resulted in everyone feeling blessed by this time together.

So my encouragement to all of you is to consider if there is someone you know who might benefit from your skills and a bit of people care, as you never know if in return that your will also be cared for in unexpected ways.

Then if you are planning on coming to the hui, is there a skill you would like to share? If so grab your ticket and register your interest here.

Ngā mihi,

Fiona Moorhouse
Chairperson

Meet Trish Allen

I knew about Trish Allen long before I actually met her in late 2022. As soon as I began learning about permaculture, I had heard her name. I was thrilled to be able to finally interview her. You can read more about Trish in the article for NZ Gardener and Stuff. We are grateful that Trish has agreed to be a keynote speaker and facilitator at the Hui. She will talk about the strategies and initiatives she undertook to establish these projects. You could also read more about the other speakers and presenters here.

Keen on hosting a future hui in your region?

Looking ahead, we would like to harness the passion of permaculture practitioners within each region. Traditionally, the hui has been hosted by different regions around the country, but after such a long space of time without a hui, the council will be restarting the flow by managing this event.

This provides the regions time to consider if they will be the hosts for the 2025, 2026 or 2027 hui as it is an event that takes both time and a great deal of teamwork to plan.

So do you think you want to host a future hui? Gather your tribe and have a chat, then let us know and we will work with you to make it happen.

Looking to connect? Coming up this month our members are holding events around the country. Head over to our website and check out what is being offered in your local area.If you are a member and have an event coming up that you would like to promote on the website, please get in touch by emailing Permaculture In New Zealand Find EVENTS
