The 2017 National Permaculture Hui for Permaculture in New Zealand will be held in Kaiwaka, Northland over Anzac Weekend 22nd - 25th.
It will be held in the Kaiwaka Sports Association and the adjacent primary school with an emphasis on camping for accommodation to take advantage of Northland's balmy weather. The Sports association is historically significant as one of 3 venues of the first international Permaculture Conference after Bill Mollison taught a PDC in New Zealand in the mid 80s. It is a hub of community life in Kaiwaka hosting most major events.
Key-note speakers Rueben Taipari, Kay Baxter, Tui Shortland, Herbie Skipper and Graham North present in the mornings while we use well facilitated Open Space Technology to organise our afternoons.
Open Space Technology is a conference facilitation tool in which the whole group co-creates the topics of the sessions which results in an engaging and enthusiastic participatory process. Together, we'll create space in which to have the conversations that are important and pressing for us as permaculturalists in New Zealand. This method will be valuable for the Permaculture community to hear each other and reconnect.
Getting to KAIWAKA is simple because we're on State highway One halfway between Auckland and Whangarei. Both Naked Bus and Intercity make several stops daily as well as car pooling https://www.carpoolworld.com/. The Sports Association is at 2 Gibbons Road... coming from Auckland - right left right - so we're not on the highway but still right next to town.
The theme of reconnect not only alludes to strengthening bonds in all aspects of our lives, but also to Kaiwaka being a connnection point for Northland with the rest of the country and historically Maori used the Kaiwaka River to connect the East Coast to the Kaipara Harbour - the biggest Harbour in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Permaculture in New Zealand AGM will be held at 9am on Sunday the 23rd of April in the main gymnasium. All members are welcome.
